Business model

Our business model

GRI 102-1, GRI 102-2, GRI 102-6, GRI 102-7, GRI 102-9

50Hertz operates one of Europe’s most modern electricity transmission grids. Its grid runs across the north and east of Germany, supplying electricity to around 18 million people around the clock. Spread across ten sites, 50Hertz’s 1,388 employees act as the interface between electricity generators on the one hand and distribution system operators and major consumers on the other. 50Hertz operates 10,325 kilometres of lines and acts as a coordinator for every electricity market player within its grid area; it manages and coordinates balancing groups and offers up unsold electricity from renewable energy sources for sale on the power exchange. In order to successfully help shape the energy transition and achieve its own objective of covering 100% of the energy demand across its grid area with renewable energy by 2032, 50Hertz develops innovative solutions for the system and the market integration of intermittent renewable energy.

Objectives and Visions of 50Hertz

50Hertz Transmission GmbH holds a natural monopoly over the transmission of electricity in the north and east of Germany. The company is the exclusive operator of the extra-high-voltage grid in this area, as the competitive operation of such a grid is not economically sensible. 50Hertz is therefore subject to regulatory supervision by the national regulatory authority: the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA). The German regulatory system shapes 50Hertz’s business model and sets its revenue cap when its grid fees are calculated. As part of Elia Group, 50Hertz believes that interconnectors, especially hybrid interconnectors which are also linked to offshore wind farms, are necessary to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal. Given the enormous amount of electricity that will be needed in order to decarbonise society, Europe must harness all potential renewable energy sources, including those which are located far away from the coasts of its member states. 50Hertz operates the Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution (KF - CGS), the world’s first hybrid offshore interconnector, with its Danish counterpart, Energinet. KF - CGS connects Germany and Denmark to each other via an interconnector which is also linked to several wind farms in the Baltic Sea. As a result, the interconnector can transmit offshore wind power to either country and can also be used for cross-border electricity trading. In addition to our activities as a transmission system operator, we offer various consulting services for international customers through our subsidiary Elia Grid International (EGI) as part of the Elia Group, including improvement of the increasing integration of renewables in countries outside of Belgium and Germany.

Our tasks

GRI 102-2

Grid ownership: we provide the infrastructure of the future.

We develop, build and maintain our transmission grid in line with the needs of society and by taking a long-term view of these needs. We focus on the integration of renewable energy, the development of an offshore high-voltage grid and the construction of interconnectors to speed up the development of an integrated European electricity market.

System control: we maintain the balance between supply and demand.

The task of securely operating the electricity grid is becoming more and more complex as a result of the rapid increase in: renewable energy sources; the number of energy sector players; new technologies; and cross-border cooperation. In order to guarantee a reliable supply of electricity and carry out efficient system control activities, we monitor the power grid in real time. This requires expert knowledge and powerful tools and processes.

Market development: we are part of an integrated European market.

We offer up access to our infrastructure to all market participants in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner. Digitalisation and the arrival of new technology offer market participants new possibilities for optimising their electricity management by selling any excess energy they produce or temporarily reducing their energy consumption. We develop services and mechanisms that enable market trading to occur via different platforms. This contributes to economic competitiveness and benefits society. Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und zum Wohl der Gesellschaft bei.

Trusteeship: we transparently integrate renewable energy into the market.

The German legislator has transferred the responsibility for the coordination and settlement of legal levy systems which promote the use of environmentally friendly technology to the country’s four transmission system operators. We collect these levies from consumers and coordinate their distribution to parties who integrate environmentally friendly technologies into the grid. If the electricity from renewable energy sources is not directly sold, we trade this electricity on the power exchange.
