Sustainability Report/Sustainability 2020/Economy/Human rights

Human rights

GRI 205-1, GRI 308-1, GRI 308-2, GRI 414-1

50Hertz expresses its commitment to respecting human rights, the right to privacy, personal safety and freedom of expression as well as ownership rights of its employees, residents and customers. 50Hertz also assumes responsibility for compliance with social standards in the supply chain. For this reason, 50Hertz is not only a member of the UN Global Compact, it is also committed to the core labour standards of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

In order to ensure that business partners also observe international rules on human rights – such as the prohibition on forced and child labour – sustainability and ethics are essential components in the assessment of suppliers and service providers. Suppliers of Elia Group affirm their commitment to cooperation in accordance with a common binding code of conduct. This is a component of all supplier contracts of 50Hertz. 50Hertz also raises awareness for sustainable conduct in regular meetings and thus ensures respect for compliance with ethical principles and guidelines for sustainable development. All orders are placed centrally. As a result, all of 50Hertz’s business locations are examined to ensure their compliance with human rights and anti-corruption obligations.

50Hertz carried out an analysis of the direct and indirect supply chains based on the human rights requirements set out in the National Action Plan (NAP). As a result, four human rights risks could be prioritised:

  • Occupational health and safety
  • Environmental protection and health
  • Employment and working conditions
  • Freedom of assembly and speech

50Hertz examines the identified risks in a more detailed analysis of the supply chain of submarine cables. Submarine cables are used for offshore activities and are a suitable object of analysis due to their complex supply chain and high investment volume. The analysis includes surveys of 50Hertz’s direct suppliers in order to determine, monitor and derive suitable measures for potential risks of previous stages in the value chain.

The plan is to gradually expand supply chain management to include sustainability issues over the next few years.
