Sustainability Report/Sustainability 2019/Society/Stakeholder Dialogue

Stakeholder Dialogue

GRI 102-29, GRI 102-43, GRI 102-44, GRI 413-1, GRI Sector disclosure Stakeholder engagement

50Hertz organised numerous networking and specialist events with various interest groups in 2019. In the political field, these are various regularly held dialogue formats where stakeholders from authorities, parliaments, NGOs, associations and industry come together to discuss current energy policy issues. These events offer space for discussion in an open and trusting atmosphere.
In February, for example, representatives of all democratic parties took part in a parliamentary breakfast at the 50 Hertz headquarters in Berlin, where the effects of the Network Expansion Acceleration Act (NABEG) were discussed.
In January and September, energy policy network evenings took place, during which the participants exchanged views with 50 hertz experts on the necessity of higher capacity utilisation of the transmission networks and on the challenges of offshore network expansion.
At the state level, 50Hertz regularly invites to the "Ländertreff Netze Nordost", where representatives of the states in the 50Hertz grid area discuss current energy policy challenges with experts.

In May 50Hertz hosted the annual Policy and Regulation Day. Distribution system operators, major consumers in our grid area, renewables producers, lignite-fired power plant operators and representatives of 50Hertz discussed the decisions of the Commission for Growth, Structural Change and Employment (KWSB, or "Coal Commission" for short), upcoming developments in incentive regulation and the development of electricity rates. Hard discussions and mutual respect for the different points of view characterize this exchange. In August, 50Hertz hosted the now 11th System Security Conference on the topic of higher grid utilisation, followed by the annual EEG Conference, which this year focused on the design of the redispatch with renewables in accordance with new NABEG regulations.
In addition, around 100 meetings are held annually with international, national and local political players, business representatives and NGOs to provide transparent information on selected energy industry or energy policy issues.A highlight in 2019 was the event on the commissioning of the Arkona wind farm and the 50Hertz grid connection Ostwind 1, at which German Chancellor Angela Merkel was a guest. In her speech she emphasized the importance of the Baltic Sea in terms of offshore wind.

Elia Group organizes first European stakeholder evening in Brussels

More than 120 guests from the European energy sector met on December 12 at the first joint event of Elia and 50Hertz. At the midst of current topics such as the Green Deal and the COP25 in Madrid, the Elia Group presented its new study "Future-proofing the EU energy system towards 2030". Several guest speakers and video statements accompanied the evening. German Minister of Economics and Energy Peter Altmaier praised the German-Belgian cooperation within the Elia Group. The new EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, focused on the measures necessary to implement the Green Deal: accelerating decarbonisation, improving energy efficiency and integrating more renewable energies.

Kerstin Maria Rippel

Head of Communication & Policy 50Hertz

„Infrastructure is the key to decarbonising the energy sector. And our political stakeholders know this.“
