Our Vision

FOR A SUCCESSFUL ENERGY TRANSITION IN A SUSTAINABLE WORLD

GRI 102-40, GRI 102-9

The energy transition does not come by itself. It will only become possible if we actively support it. If we remain in dialogue with all those involved in order to openly discuss the challenges of grid expansion. When we offer a reliable infrastructure that reacts flexibly to fluctuations in supply and demand. And when we make our decisions from the perspective of our customers and stakeholders. Then it will be an energy transition for a sustainable world.

65 %

A 65 percent share of renewable energies in electricity consumption by 2030 – this is the target value agreed by the CDU/CSU and SPD parliamentary groups in the coalition agreement. What does this mean for 50Hertz? We are already securely integrating 56.5 percent* of renewable energies into our grid area in northern and eastern Germany. In projects such as WindNODE, we are working on making innovative technologies efficiently usable for this purpose. We are making our grid and our systems fit to meet the additional transmission requirements safely and in line with market and consumer requirements. You can read in this annual report how this works in detail.

About 50Hertz

In northern and eastern Germany, we operate the 50Hertz extra-high voltage grid and thus secure the electricity supply for around 18 million people. This grid with the voltage levels 150 kilovolts (kV), 220 kV and 380 kV extends over a circuit length of more than 10,000 kilometers (km). At a total of eleven locations, more than 1,000 employees ensure that electricity flows around the clock in Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

As a part of the international Elia Group, we are committed to a successful energy transition - together with our majority shareholder, the Belgian transmission system operator Elia. As a strong group of two transmission system operators in the heart of Europe, we can play a leading role in developing the energy system of the future. Our local roots in northern and eastern Germany are a key success factor.

Energy transition targets for 2025* already met

56.5 percent of the electricity consumed in the 50Hertz grid area was calculated to have been generated from renewable energies by 2018. 50Hertz is prepared to make additional efforts to reach the political target of 65 percent by 2030. This requires a viable regulatory framework with the right incentives.

Reliability

The 50Hertz region is a pioneer in the integration of renewables and at the same time offers a high level of security of supply.
