Sustainability Report/Sustainability 2020/Employees/Training and education

Training and education

GRI 404-1, GRI 404-2

In order to realise our vision and our strategic objective "From 60 to 100 by 2032: for an economy with prospects" and to meet the challenges of tomorrow, motivated employees are an important success factor in times of constant change.  Employees are therefore offered individually tailored education and training opportunities and relevant additional qualifications. Systematic succession planning guarantees that a sufficient number of potentially suitable employees are available for all management positions, and that we can fill vacancies from within the Company whenever possible. To that end, we identify and develop talent – for instance through programmes for "Young Professionals" designed and offered in cooperation with Elia Group. 50Hertz obtains qualified new talent through our own internal apprenticeship programme, a 24-month trainee programme and by hosting internships and supervising doctoral, bachelor’s, and master’s theses in cooperation with universities and colleges. In 2020, a total of 79 student employees and 7 trainees worked for 50Hertz. Currently, 29 young men and women are completing their industrial or business apprenticeships, which corresponds to a trainee rate of 2.2%. A survey about our "Fair Training" certificate, which we received once again, revealed that 93.3% of our trainees and dual students want to stay at 50Hertz once they have graduated. In 2020, all trainees and dual students received a follow-up contract and were made permanent employees. On average, each employee received 8.67 hours of training in the reporting year, excluding regular safety training. In addition, management staff are offered 50Hertz-specific training modules for developing individual leadership skills.

In the third quarter of 2020, a talent programme was launched by Elia Group, supplementing the existing programmes Tesla and Faraday. In light of the continuously changing environment and the digital transformation, the project team will develop a joint, integrated, comprehensive and, above all, sustainable framework for the talent and skills management within Elia Group.

A little more about our rules of employment

50Hertz decided against a complex certification by an expensive service provider. We rather promote four non-commercial distinctions: Kununu, Fair Company and Trendence. For all of them the feedback of 50Hertz employees, trainees, apprentices and interns is decisive.
